My First Ride On An OTTB

Holy sh*t folks, we’ve arrived.

I’ll be honest. I wasn’t expecting to ride an ex-racehorse today… but I did. And you want to know something? He was a perfect gentleman about it.

It’s been one month to the day since Indiana Jones arrived at the farm. One month to the day and I’ve taken my first successful ride with the new boy.

Here’s how we got here (so far).

We’ve started to develop a routine. Lunge for a few minutes until we’ve got some focus and attention. Desensitize and start engaging his back with bending and unwinding with a long lead line. I’ve seen it coming together over the past week.

After a few minutes on the lunge line today, Indy was calm, responsive, and well… downright lazy. In fact I’d go so far as to say he might prefer walking over anything. Running? Ha! We don’t need that at this new racetrack. Walking speed is AOK with me and thankfully, it was for Indy too.

Leading up to today, Lisa had taken Indy for his first ride and his reaction was much of the same. “Oh, we’re going to walk now? OK.”

So walk we will, Mr. Jones. Walk we will.
